Health care changes begin to take affect

NASHVILLE - A new round of health insurance regulations go on the books today, as directed by the Affordable Care Reform Act.

Those regulations include a ban on rescinding coverage, limits on annual and lifetime dollar coverage, extending benefits for preventive care and covering children under their parents' policies until they reach the age of 26.

Tennessee Health Care Campaign Deputy Director Tony Garr says that last provision should ease the minds of many Tennesseans, "especially in today's economy, where daughters and sons are graduating from college and they don't have a job, or can't find a job, or can't find a job with health insurance."

Garr sees the new rules as the dawn of a new era, switching to a focus on people over profits.

"We allowed all that to happen in this country, and we've got to remember that all that was for the benefit and the profit of the insurance industry. Now we're turning this around, and things are going to be for the benefit and the good of the people of Tennessee."

Health insurance companies have warned that the new regulations will result in higher premiums.

Be happy you at least have insurance. Many people cannot afford it, even some who can cannot qualify for it based on the old insurance policies (which refused coverage to people with pre-existing conditions and even those who were *suspected* of developing a costly condition).

What is the point of health insurance or medical care if only the wealthy and the healthy can get it? It's the sick and the poor who need it the most! I am never surprised at how greedy, ignorant, and selfish some people are in this country.

No, they don't- not since they downsized tenncare. I know of many people who make less than $20,000 a year who don't qualify for Tenncare. In order to get on Tenncare, you usually have to either be under 18 or practically dying. So you're trying to tell me you are mad at the people who barely make enough to get by or buy enough groceries for themselves, because they 'supposedly' get a free ride on Tenncare? How petty. I bet there are many who wish they had the privilege to have your problems. Instead of worrying about paying rent or buying food or keeping the car in running condition, you might have to worry about paying some taxes. How unfortunate for you.

My brother suffers from Chron's disease and is a six foot man who now weighs 140 pounds because of his disease. He has no insurance, and he does not qualify for Tenncare and has to pay for his pain medication out of pocket- and he can no longer afford that, so now he's probably looking at passing away in about a year unless he gets medical attention. Free ride my ass.

It is virtually impossible for an adult man to get tenncare. josef, if your rates went up by $250, it has nothing to do with Obama. It has to do with your insurance company's bottom line. Did you even pay attention to the rules that have gone into effect and how they might benefit you?

One of the rules is as of now, your insurance company cannot retroactively cancel your policy (something they do when an insured gets too sick). They also have to pay for preventative care (such as pap smears and mammograms, etc.). And they also have to cover the children of insureds until they are 26. That will prevent uninsured people from driving up prices.

None of those things are a bad thing, and none of them affect your premiums. The insurance companies are feeding you a line of bull so you'll have someone else to blame other than them.

JJay, just what makes you (and others on the public nickel) feel you are entitled to have me, or anyone else pay for your health care? I take care of myself, and thanks to people who do not, it costs me twice as much. According to you, I don't have a gripe because those on the nipple of mother government are somehow entitled to a handout and the expense of others. Like spoiled, angry children they demand others carry the load for them. I may not have a lot, somebody might make fun of my 12 year old car, but I worked for what I have, including my health insurance, and pay for it myself. I don't expect or demand to be carried by somebosdy else.

Thomas Jefferson said "I think we have more machinery of government than is necessary,
too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious." If he thouhgt it was bad then, he ought to see things now!

Shame on you all I am a Nurse I can tell you TNcare is doesn't cover all. We would have a better plan had the scare mongers who by the way were shills for the insurance industry, not be given the air time they got. Your plans rise every year the services get cut every year. We now have some protections We needed more. the new health care plans ( Obamacare) do not affect tncare. That is a different issue all together. Had the screamers not been the focus we would be allowed to buy into Medicare. that would have given the insurance co's a run for the money. That would have been competition. Remember that when you vote in November!
