Law enforcement officers in Tennessee will receive annual supplemental pay for training under its own designated account in a bill proposed by Rutherford County Sheriff Robert F. Arnold.
Gov. Bill Haslam signed the bill recently to guarantee annual supplemental pay for the law enforcement officers.
Arnold asked Rutherford County’s legislative delegation to sponsor the measure. Research by sheriff’s training Cpl. Greg Wassom showed 10 years when officers statewide failed to receive the $600 supplement for completing 40 hours of training. Wassom found the supplement pay was funded from driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations.
“This is a significant contribution for all law enforcement officers in Tennessee,” Arnold said in thanking state Sen. Jim Tracy, R-Shelbyville, and state Rep. Joe Carr, R-Lascassas, who sponsored the bill in the Senate and House, respectively. The bill designates money deposited into the Police Pay Supplement Fund will be used only for supplementing law enforcement training pay. Previously, the law allowed the fund to be used in the state’s general fund.
The bill passed the House and the Senate in April.
In a Senate press release, Tracy said the bill will ensure money in the fund will go for law enforcement training.
“This fund is very important to our law enforcement officers and is needed to enhance public safety through training,” Tracy said. “We need it to remain for the purpose it was intended and that is what this bill will accomplish.” |
