With the Super Bowl quickly approaching, Hammerhaid finds himself with a tough decision.
“Like ... which team am I gonna root for?”
Especially after the on-again, off-again season the Titans had.
“Part of me is ready to root for the Colts and the rest of me is leaning toward the Saints,” he explained.
Way back in his boyhood, Hammerhaid was a Colts fan. “Johnny Unitas was the greatest QB of the day,” he said.
But then there was the infamous Super Bowl III when the New York Jets and Joe Namath defeated the Colts 16 to 7. Johnny U. had missed most of the season, but came in near the end of the game to score the Colt’s only touchdown.
With Johnny U. retiring, Hammerhaid lost interest in the Colts. (We won’t mention which team his interest switched too. OK, if you insist ... It was the Cowgirls.)
When the Titans moved to Tennessee, he switched allegiance for (maybe) the last time.
Of course, like many Vols fans, Hammerhaid has always wished Peyton Manning well and is pleased that he is leading the AFC-champion Colts to Super Bowl XLIV.
But, on the other hand there’s New Orleans, the former “Aints.”
Lead by Drew Brees and running back Reggie Bush, the Saints are fast, fast, fast.
“And you’ve gotta like that it’s the first time the Saints have ever made the Super Bowl since the team was formed back in the mid 1960s,” Hammerhaid said.
And you have to consider which team Peyton’s dad Archie Manning will root for.
“Dang, Archie is really caught in the middle. He played a dozen years or more with the Saints and now his son is facing them in the Super Bowl,” Hammerhaid said.
“Heck, Archie, I think, still lives in New Orleans, but I would imagine he will be pulling for his son to win. That’s just how the Mannings are,” he said.
So who will Hammerhaid will be pulling for?
“I will be yelling for the winner. Doesn’t matter which team. I’ll just sorta let things slide so I can come out on top,” he explained.
Besides, Hammerhaid is usually more interested in the Super Bowl party than the game. It’s gonna be bigger and better this year ‘cause it is at someone else’s home.
“They have a huge TV .... biggest I’ve ever seen with a monster sound system. You don’t measure that screen in inches, you measure it in feet,” Hammerhaid grinned. “Heck, I don’t even think I will be able to doze off and miss half the game this year.”
Or at least family members won’t have the delight of pulling pranks on H-haid while he snores away.
Usually it’s the food that gets Hammerhaid’s attention instead of the game. All that pizza, hot wings and the various mix of chip and dips and other finger foods usually gets him at halftime and forces him to nap during the second half.
“This year, I have a different Super Bowl strategy. I am going to try not to start eating until after the Who performs at halftime,” he said.
“It’s gonna be interesting to see them on the big screen, even though they aren’t what they used to be.”
Over the years, The Who lost two key members drummer Keith Moon and bassist John Entwistle. The new boss ain’t same as the old boss, but anyway.... it will be great to see them.
