Haley Road Recycling Center operates under new guidelines

Effective July 4, 2014, The Rutherford County Solid Waste Department will now have new hours of operation at the Haley Road Recycling Center in Murfreesboro.

Mac Nolen, Rutherford County Solid Waste Director states, “For over a decade the County operated several sites that were available 24 hours per day, seven days a week. Haley Road is the last unmanned site, and unfortunately the county is no longer able to offer this type of service. Because it is unmanned, some citizens have abused and even vandalized facilities, and contaminated recycling commodities. We must change to operate more efficiently.”

The recycling facility at 1140 Haley Road in Murfreesboro will still be open, but will now have new hours of operation which are Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The center will be closed Friday and Sunday, as well as all county observed holidays. The facility is for Rutherford County residents only, and this will be strictly enforced.

Nolen also stated that the county accepts mixed paper, cardboard, tin, aluminum and plastics that are labeled with #1 - #7 (except Styrofoam). It is necessary to flatten all commodities to maximize loads in the containers.

Fluorescent tubes and electronics are also accepted from Rutherford County residents only at no charge. Citizens from other counties may not use this facility in order to control costs.

Electronics will also be accepted from businesses for a fee, based on the total weight. The price structure is as follows:

0 – 33 lbs. = $5
34 – 67 lbs. = $10
68 – 100 lbs. = $15
101 – 133 lbs. = $20
134 – 167 lbs. = $25
168 – 200 lbs. = $30

Vehicles will be monitored to document how often they enter the center. This is in an attempt to prevent businesses from abusing the service.

Nolen also noted that when the gate to the center is closed, the recycling center is closed. Leaving items outside of the gate is considered illegal dumping.
