We’re halfway home in the 2013 high school football season. Many battle lines have been drawn, and we’re beginning to see who the championship and playoff contenders are going to be this year.
This week, all nine Rutherford County football teams will step out of their respective district. Through five weeks, my record stands at 32-4.
Here is Monte’s Week 5 picks:
Beech at Siegel
While Jalen Hurd, the Tennessee commitment, is out with a shoulder injury, the Buccaneers still pack plenty of offensive punch. However, when you want to talk about explosive offense, Siegel packs a might punch. This should be an enjoyable Thursday night contest.
Pick: Siegel 52, Beech 33
Independence at Blackman
This will be a battle of two very talented teams, although it’s surprising to see Independence at 3-2. Blackman is rolling along at 5-0.
Pick: Blackman 35, Independence 20
Brentwood at Oakland
The Patriots, who own the state’s No. 2 ranking, will face a fundamentally sound and well-coached team. It won’t matter.
Pick: Oakland 34, Brentwood 14
Riverdale at Hendersonville
Even in years when Riverdale has been on top, the Commandoes have always been a difficult matchup for the Warriors. Riverdale is looking for its first two-game winning streak of the season.
Pick: Hendersonville 35, Riverdale 31
Smyrna at Sycamore
The Bulldogs are coming off their first loss of the season (at Oakland). At 4-1, they remain in good position in terms of earning a playoff spot.
Pick: Smyrna 33, Sycamore 20
Summit at Stewarts Creek
Summit has scored just 56 points in five games. Stewarts Creek best shot at its first win will come on Friday night.
Pick: Summit 31, Stewarts Creek 30
Grace Baptist at Eagleville
The Eagles are 4-1 and ranked No. 10 in the Class 2A poll this week.
Pick: Eagleville 24, Grace Baptist 6
Whitwell at MTCS
The Cougars are coming off their first district win over Community. They’re looking for their fifth win overal.
Pick: MTCS 28, Whitwell, 6.
