Another week of District 7-AAA and District 9-A games are on tap as we inch our way closer to the TSSAA state playoffs.
Playoffs? Yes, playoffs.
Folks, the postseason is right around the corner, and every week we have a slate of games that have postseason implications in one way or another.
District 7-AAA is again flexing its muscles as arguably the top league in the state. I look for four teams to make the playoffs out of the district, and if Eagleville and Middle Tennessee Christian School continue on their course, we will have six of our nine Rutherford County teams in the postseason.
Not bad at all.
However, first thing is first: Each team still has four games remaining, and a lot of things can transpire over the upcoming weeks.
Last week, I was 8-1 overall, moving the season total to 35-4.
Here is a look at this week’s area prep picks:
La Vergne at Blackman
Blackman is cruising along at 6-0 (3-0 in District 7), while La Vergne comes in at 2-4, 1-2 and coming off a blowout win over Whites Creek. La Vergne can be enigma at times, but the Wolverines can be dangerous at times. However, the Blaze are marching toward a matchup with Oakland in what could be a battle of two 7-AAA unbeatens.
Pick: Blackman 49, La Vergne 13
Riverdale at Stewarts Creek
Congrats to Stewarts Creek for earning the program’s first win last week (52-28 over Summit). You like to see kids enjoy the fruits of their labor with the reward of victory. Riverdale has just one win this season and by no means will look past Stewarts Creek. The Warriors bug-a-boo has been turnovers, but they can move the football. Should be a very entertaining game on Friday night.
Pick: Riverdale 48, Stewarts Creek 35
Siegel at Smyrna
This could very well be a battle for the eventual third spot in the final league standings. Siegel’s offense has been unstoppable of late, scoring 118 points in its last two games. Smyrna is more methodical, and the Bulldogs feature a solid running game that could cause the Stars problems. Should be another entertaining matchup, but Siegel simply has it rolling right now.
Pick: Siegel 49, Smyrna 27
Eagleville at Fayetville
Eagleville currently sits atop the 9-A standings, but will find a tough test in Fayetteville on Friday night. Fayetteville has taken its lumps, but it is an athletic team on the rise. This game could go either way.
Pick: Eagleville 28, Fayetteville 26
MTCS at Moore County
MTCS has a good shot to make the playoffs, but it remains to be seen if the Cougars are a true contender in the 9-A race. Moore County returned almost its entire roster and was picked to win the league. However, Moore County is 3-3 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Pick: Moore County 28, MTCS 14
