The first child born: Dr. Thomas Norman, 1803
The first sheriff: Samuel McBride, 1804
The first grand jury foreman: Alex McCulloch, 1804. He was the father of famous Texas Rangers (and Confederate generals) Ben and Henry McCulloch.
The first tavern: Mark Mitchell at Jefferson, 1804.
First tavern in Murfreesboro: A. Carmichael, 1813, located near Pump Springs on the North side of the Square.
First general store: William Nash at Jefferson, 1803.
First postmaster: Joel Childress, 1812. He was the father of Sarah Childress, who married future President James K. Polk in 1941.
First surveyor: Hugh Robinson, 1811.
First school: Bradley Academy, 1810.
First county court meeting: Home of Thomas Rucker, 1804.
First mayor of Murfreesboro: Joshua Haskell, 1817.
