Happy Saturday ... it ain’t too happy cause Hammerhead’s having to work a bit.

It’s interesting to note that some of Rutherford County’s rural communities are making a comeback. Places like Rockvale and Stewartsboro are growing like crazy, but other bygone communities have completely slipped off the map.

Mechanicsville for one ...

Called Friendsley by some, Mechanicsville was named by the Jobe family who had a bustling furniture business a bit south of Stewartsboro. They were also known for crafting a quality coffin.

Naturally, given the growth of North Rutherford County, something else is now occupping most of the land once habitated by Mechanicsville. Most people now refer to the area as Sam Ridley Parkway.

While we are in the area, well at least near Stewarts Creek, there are still traces of a little community once called Hardeman Mill. In later years, the mill that gave the community its name changed ownership and became called Gregory Mill.

Located on Enon Springs Road, Gregory Mill Park is now home to Smyrna’s splash pad and a park known for its picnic facilities. Portions of the historic mill, including the dam, still exist.
