Hey-ho, it’s Saturday and I’ve jumped on the computer while another coat of paint dries. Betty Lou, that slave driver, has me painting a bedroom pink. It was a very, very, very light pink in the can, but the more it dries the darker it looks on wall. I am beginning to suspect that I have been tricked once again. I hate bubble gum pink on a wall. Back when I was a kid, the only place you could get paint was at a hardware store up on the Square like Holden Hardware, Haynes Hardware or Osburn, Harrell Hoover. Back in the late 50s, Harrell Hoover took the big step of moving just off the Square at 225 W. College St. Over the decades, the building was occupied by Holloway’s children clothes, the Board of Realtors and Bangkok Cafe. Now the building is home to the new Heritage Center which features exhibits and information on Murfreesboro’s bygone days. It’s open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and best of all, admission is free. I enjoyed the pictures of Uncle Dave Macon at his home in Kittrell and that exhibit on the Jazz Age in Murfreesboro is really good. Folks would be amazed about all that was going on back then. Even some famous criminals like Al “Scarface” Capone and Dillinger visited on their way south to Miami. Dang, I hate the fact Betty Lou tossed my “Scarface” DVD away ... got tired of me saying “say hello to my little friend.” Well anyway ... Visit the Heritage Center and you’ll say “dang, I learned something.” Never hurts to know a little about the town you live in especially if you are a new arrival. They’ve even been known to give tours of the historic buildings downtown and are a good source of things to see and visit in the old ‘Boro. Well, it’s time for another coat of that (*&^ pink paint. Cya. The Heritage Center is a joint venture of the Heritage Area, Main Street Murfreesboro/Rutherford County, Inc., the city of Murfreesboro, and the Center for Historic Preservation at MTSU. Additional support comes from the Rutherford County government and State Farm Insurance. Visit the centers at 225 W. College St. in Murfreesboro, or call (615) 217-8013 for additional information.
Open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.; Open on Sat 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. from April 1-Sept 1) |
