H-haid's corner: Headed to Triune

Howdy, it’s an especially beautiful Saturday.

If ol’ Hammerhead can beg out of most of his honey-do list, he’s headed out this AM to the bob-in burg of Triune.

Naw, he’s not trying to do the Renaissance thing again. He’s gonna get a tour of the Civil War earthworks built by Federal troops during the occupation of Middle Tennessee.

After the Battle of Stones River on Dec. 30-31, 1863 the Federal Army of the Cumberland fortified a line of defenses from Murfreesboro to Franklin.

Naturally, Murfreesboro, with its Fortress Rosecrans and depot on the main railroad line from points North to points South, served as Union headquarters. The historic Courthouse served as a signal station.

The fortifications at Triune were built on three hilltops just north of Triune. Redoubts, artillery positions, and powder magazines were connected by trenches and rifle pits. It was the direct signal link between Murfreesboro and Franklin.

While only a small portion of Fortress Rosecrans still exists, the earthen works at Triune are still pretty much intact.

Today’s tour will be led by Tennessee Wars Commission Director of Programs Fred Prouty.
If you want to tag along, you better get it in gear.

Those attending will meet at 10 a.m. at the Triune Methodist Church, one mile north of the Highway 96 intersection on Nolensville. The group will caravan to the site for a 10:30 a.m. start.

Wear hiking appropriate footwear, a day pack with water, snacks, or a light lunch, and be prepared for mildly strenuous hiking, although a small portion of the earthworks can be viewed, Hammerhead style, without much walking.
