“Other states have allowed guns in parks and facilities except when competitive activities are taking place,” he said, adding he will propose allowing permit holders to carry handguns into local parks “except at competitive sporting events.”
Toby be prepared to define "competitive sporting events". So when a pickup game of basketball starts, are the participants going to need to alert others as to the competitive nature of the game?
Why doesn’t the council stop wasting time on this pointless issue and worry about the real problem. This weekend was a perfect example of the cops chasing fireworks like dogs while the public was getting shot with guns.

Nice of the TSSAA to get the whole town worked up on this issue when they didn't even have a stance on it. Like my mother always said "think before you speak".

I would like to see a front page retraction due to improper facts from the DNJ who will never publish this particular article.

Bragg needs to give the name of the unnamed official that gave him the misinformation and TSSAA needs to fire the official.

The citizens with carry permits are not the ones commiting the crimes. on the contrary; they would protect you should some insane shootist attack you and your children. And the fact that it is know that citizens with permits are allowed in parks is a deterent in itself. Let's try some common sense for a change.

Now, that the TSSAA has said ok what about the Little League sports? I thought I read that this was also a thing to consider. Just say NO to guns in parks at any time. We have survived very well for many years without the guns. Why change now ?

As a local cop, I'd like to second "deeg59's" opinion. It is common sense...we do not have problems with Handgun Carry Permit holders.
Does anyone think a law is going to stop a criminal from taking a gun to a park? Nope, only the law abiding citizen.

About time they speak some common sence. I Myself would like to see the DNJ print a Article on this,But the chances are slim to none.
TN-popo I wish you were in office Because i know alot of law Officers dont think like you,& they should.

prin I think you need to walk down one of murfreesboro's inner city streets one night and see how many times you get shot at.Then I bet you would get a gun permit holder to go with you next time.

The DNJ did print the story today! I am surprised!

Why am I not surprised that the city council would hestitate on allowing guns in parks if it would cause the city to lose money, but if it comes to the possibility of a child or other citizen losing his life from a gunshot in a park, it's no big deal.

Why is common sense so uncommon? I used to drive a cab in Murfreesboro quite a few years ago and there were certain streets that we kinda avoided at night. Now for us, that was common sense. Wish we had had the right to carry at that time.

Here is 1 for you.. Straight from the University of Chicago, (they did a 5 year study of Firearms and Crime)
2,500,000 crimes/year (during the 5 year study) were stopped IN PROGRESS by Private citizens with firearms.
tha is a total of 12,500,000 over the total 5 year period.
UCLA conducted the same study, and their finding were almost identical The Average was 2.72 million crimes/year by Private citizens with firearms.
Both studies showed tht Police only stopped ~10,000crimes/year in progress the rest of the time, the police just cleaned up the mess once the crime was committed.
