Sam Jackson, research associate for the University of Tennessee, will present Grassoline!, a look at UT's Switchgrass Initiative, at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 16 in the Linebaugh Library Reading Room. “We’re delighted to have Mr. Jackson offer this timely presentation on renewable energy. We all know there is a limited supply of oil from our planet. The time to find an alternative is now,” said Heather Lanier, Linebaugh Library’s Circulation Supervisor.
Switchgrass is a perennial warm-season grass, native to Tennessee that works well as a biomass crop and could be used in the production of ethanol. The UT Biofuels Initiative will position the state as a leader in the nation's efforts toward reduced dependence on petroleum, according to the University of Tennessee.
Jackson works with the Sun Grant, a concept to solve America's energy needs and revitalize rural communities with land-grant university research, education and extension programs on renewable energy and bio-based, non-food industries. “Grassoline!” is free and open to the public and is being presented in conjunction with One Book. One Book is a community wide effort that challenges our citizens to unify Rutherford County by reading the same book at the same time. One Book strives to emphasize local nonprofits that make a difference in our lives and highlight issues of importance with a book's theme or subject matter.
The 2009 One Book selection is “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” by Barbara Kingsolver. In the coming weeks, Linebaugh Library will host several additional events in conjunction with One Book along the theme of environmental consciousness and self-sufficiency. Linebaugh Public Library is located at 105 W. Vine St. in Murfreesboro. For more information, call 615-893-4131 or visit www.linebaugh.org.
