A defendant in a 26-year-old murder case was indicted this week by the Rutherford County grand jury.

Defendant Randy Ray McFarlin, 49, of Bristol, Va., was charged April 30 with the murder of co-worker Errastus “Gene” Stump who was shot in the back of the head in March 1982. His body was found April 28, 1982.

Sheriff’s Detective Lt. Bill Sharp and Sgt. Dan Goodwin reopened the case and arrested McFarlin after talking to witnesses.

Grand jurors indicted McFarlin on charges of first-degree murder, felony murder and armed robbery.

In another case, defendants Kesha D. Adams, 28, and her husband, Robert, 34, both of La Vergne, and Bryant C. Overton, 24, of 1115 S.E. Broad St., were indicted on charges of criminal conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery and attempted first-degree murder of victim Darice Brown.

Sheriff’s Detective Ty Downing accused the three defendants of robbing Brown in December. Overton was accused of robbing her of her property and shooting her multiple times in a secluded area in the Blackman community. Brown testified she crawled to the road for help.

In another case, grand jurors indicted William C. Jones, 20, of 6820 Corner Drive on charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment with a weapon.

Sheriff’s Detective Todd Sparks accused Jones of firing twice at victim William B. Davis May 7. Victim Brandy Giblin stood about 15 feet away. An infant and adult were inside the home and in the line of fire.

Grand jurors issued another set of indictments charging James McCutchen, 32, of La Vergne, with aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping and vandalism.

La Vergne Detective Jackie Bauer accused McCutchen of choking a woman and threatening to kill her family May 18.

“She was begging for her life and for Mr. McCutchen to stop and he refused,” Bauer reported in the arrest warrant.

After he left, she waited for a few minutes and walked outside her home where McCutchen stood. He drove her to a store where she asked the clerk to notify police.

In another set of indictments, Jacob Peachey, 20, of 3327 Mullins Court was indicted on charges of six counts of aggravated kidnapping, five counts of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.

His arrest warrant accused Peachey of robbing five people during a hold up April 2 on Westfield Drive.

The defendants are scheduled to receive copies of their indictments July 21 from Circuit Court Judge James Clayton on the fourth floor of the Judicial Building.
