With strong moral values and artistic expression in mind, Anna Owen has opened Grace Dance Company in Smyrna.
More than just another dance studio, Owen said she designed Grace Dance Company to be a multi-purpose organization that offers age-appropriate instruction in creative movement, ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary and ballroom, in addition to providing choreography and performance services to local and regional events.
“I felt that the need for a morally sound company was desperate in this area,” Owen explained. “We want to offer a safe environment where parents, audience members, and dancers can feel comfortable with dance, whether in a practice or performance environment. In a world where dance is often perceived as provocative or even scandalous, we strive to maintain a strong set of core values within dance, and choose movement, music, costumes, and other aspects of dance accordingly.”
With more than 15 years of dance experience, Owen said she also wanted a place to create her own choreography and not be under someone else’s wing. Her background includes extensive training in dance history and choreography with a dance minor from MTSU.
“I’m hoping to establish a dance school that’s known for its techniques and for its morals, and as just a really good place to be,” Owen concluded. “I want people to come here and know they can get good dancing, and they’re not going to be exploited.”
Registration continues through March 1, and all classes are be taught by Grace Dance Company members including Owen, ballroom instructor Shanaya Thompson and jazz and tap instructor Elizabeth Harbor.
Classes include creative movement for ages 3-6, jazz and tap for ages 7-13 and ballet and contemporary for all ages. Classes are held from 6:30-7:45 p.m. Tuesday nights at Spring House Worship & Arts Center, located at the corner of Sam Ridley Parkway and Old Nashville Highway.

Local residents can cure that sweet tooth with Aspen Leaf, a self-serve frozen yogurt shop that boasts almost unlimited options to suit your every whim.
Murfreesboro’s newest frozen yogurt shop opened its doors last week at the corner of Middle Tennessee Boulevard and East Main Street, across from the MTSU campus.
“Unlike most conventional frozen yogurt establishments where you must wait for service, then have the clerk skimp a few toppings at the most, at Aspen Leaf, you simply pick up a cup, fill it with any combination of yogurt flavors ... then top it off with your favorite toppings,” according to the company website.
“Choose, one, three, 10 toppings – it’s up to you. Because your creation is priced by weight, you even control what you pay. And, we are the only frozen yogurt concept that offers gourmet candy toppings by Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.”
Aspen Leaf features frozen yogurt that is packed with live and active cultures, which benefits immune and digestive health.

For most people, using a smartphone while driving is the last thing anyone would want to encourage in the interest of safe driving. But today, State Farm has made the Driver Feedback available on Android devices, according to a press release.
“The application, available for Android, iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, provides users individual feedback about their driving habits and then offers tips on how people can drive more safely,” the release states.
Research shows certain driving habits can increase the risk of a car crash. The Driver Feedback app uses the device’s accelerometer to measure three essential driving behaviors: acceleration, braking and cornering.
When activated, at the end of each trip, the driver is provided a score and a log of potentially dangerous driving activities. If the app detects especially risky driving behaviors it provides the driver tips for improvement.
This app is one in a series of mobile and online resources State Farm makes available to people interested in becoming a better driver.
