The Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts held auditions last weekend for this year’s summer session at Middle Tennessee State University, where the school is held annually.

More than 1,200 students auditioned for the areas of dance, theatre, film, orchestra and vocal. Two hundred and thirty students soon will be chosen to attend the school, which is free to those selected.

The Governor’s School for the Arts is a four-week residency summer program for high school students gifted in the arts. The faculty consists of outstanding visual and performing artists and educators from across the nation who hold degrees from such schools as Yale, Julliard, Eastman, and others.

The educators who will be teaching at the school this summer came to Murfreesboro from all over the country to audition the students who were trying out.

Students who attend the Governor’s School live in MTSU dormitories and eat together in the school cafeteria. Faculty and counselors supervise student classes, activities, recreations, dorm living and performances.

All students attend nightly programs that provide demonstrations, slide shows, films, lectures, and outstanding performing artists and ensembles. In addition, all students have the opportunity to learn fundamental concepts about art forms other than their particular specialties.
