The Cason Lane Academy will get a new outdoor classroom, thanks to a $27,390 grant from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board.

Through the creation of the outdoor classroom, students will increase their understanding of the relevance of environmental issues. They will participate in organic gardening, composting and conduct experiments concerning the environmental conditions in their own backyard.

Drawing upon these experiences, the students will increase community awareness of environmentally responsible options and their importance through local presentations.

Cason Lane Academy is one of only 73 organizations to receive grants to create local programs to address community issues.

The Youth Advisory Board is made up of 30 students, ages 17-20, from across the United States and Canada. They are charged with helping State Farm design and implement a $5 million-a-year signature service-learning initiative to address issues important to State Farm and communities across the United States and Canada.

Members of the youth board play a critical leadership role in creating and overseeing the initiative that will address five community issues – environmental responsibility, teen driving safety, financial education, access to higher education and disaster preparedness.

More than 500 grant requests from across the U.S. and Canada were received by the board.
