Good, bad, ugly and terrific

The good: Friday night the Riverdale girls (34-1) defeated the well prepared Memphis Overton Wolverines 59-40 to advance to the finals in the TSSAA District AAA Girls State Basketball Tournament versus Memphis Central (28-9), a 66-59 winner over Science Hill.

The Lady Warriors held Overton to 16-second half points (they also did this the night before versus Knox West).

In addition, RHS got untracked on offense after the half and won the third quarter 16-10 and the fourth quarter as well, 23-6. Also good: Riverdale had only 11 turnovers to Overton’s 21 and also had three more steals than Overton.

The bad: RHS trailed almost the entire first half and into the second and were generally listless while shooting under 30 percent from the floor.

For the game, Riverdale had fewer rebounds, blocks and assists than Overton.

The ugly: After hitting only 15 of 32 free throws Thursday, Riverdale followed this up on Friday hitting 26 of 47. That’s a combined 41 of 79 or 52 percent.

That’s somewhere in the neighborhood of horrible.

The terrific: I’m sure glad a banged up and sore Tyisha Petty was able to go.

No. 20 had 27 points (five 3s), three steals, two rebounds and two assists, while playing the full 32 minutes and was absolutely sensational.

So Saturday night at 6 p.m. we have a rematch of sorts.

Riverdale beat Memphis Central at Riverdale in front of a huge Riverdale crowd on Jan. 22 in overtime, 74-72 and had to come from far behind to do it.

The gold ball is up for grabs Saturday. See you there.
