Rutherford County residents are encouraged to walk for 30 minutes Wednesday, April 7 as part of National Start! Walking Day—and area employees are celebrating by kicking off their walk with a rally at Middle Tennessee Medical Center. MTMC president and CEO Gordon Ferguson and Saint Thomas Heart at MTMC invasive cardiologist Dr. Chester Falterman will lead MTMC associates on a 30 minute walk around MTMC’s campus, equaling a half mile. Cheerleaders from Providence Christian Academy are also joining to cheer on walkers. “As the local presenting sponsor of the American Heart Association’s Start! movement, we want to set the example of being a healthy organization,” says Ferguson. “We hope that all Rutherford County residents become inspired to live healthier lifestyles, and walking is a simple way to improve your health.” According to the American Heart Association, getting at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity, like walking, each week can reduce a person’s risk of cardiovascular disease by 30 percent. Start! is the American Heart Association’s national initiative that champions walking because it has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Workplaces have proven to be important environments to foster a culture for exercise as Americans now work 164 more hours per year than 20 years ago, and jobs have become increasingly sedentary. MTMC associates and Rutherford County residents will meet at the University Street Entrance at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7.
