On Friday, December 4, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the YEAH Building on the square, in Murfreesboro, Blackman High School Marketing II Honors students will be hosting Fuel for the Fire, a benefit concert with local bands that will play, in order to raise money and awareness for the Darfur Stoves Project.
The line-up includes: The Wax Intellectual, Glitch, How Cozy?, and The Kindergarten Circus. Tickets will be sold at the door for $7. Shirts will also be sold in support of the cause. All proceeds will be donated to the Darfur Stoves Project. This even is open to the public. High school and college age students are encouraged to become a part of the movement to put a halt to genocide.
Currently genocide is occurring in Darfur, a small region in Africa. The Janjaweed, a militia developed by the Sudanese government, is attacking the Darfuri citizens and villages. Thus far, over 400 villages have been destroyed and over 400,000 have been murdered.
The Darfur Stoves Project is an organization that purchases fuel efficient stoves which are given to Darfuri women who have been displaced and are now living in refugee camps. Traveling in search of fuel wood can be life-threatening for these women. By providing women with fuel efficient stoves, the women are able to stay in a safe place for longer periods of time. |
