Even though the Farmers’ Market closed for the season, consumers may still buy fresh, locally grown produce from Middle Tennessee farmers.

Stones River Market will deliver winter produce such as apples, zucchini, lettuce, beets, carrots and broccoli to consumers from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. each Thursday at Cannonsburgh, said market founder John Erdmann of Murfreesboro.

Erdmann partners with Walter and Carol Clarke of Rainbow Hill Farm of McMinnville and Ben and Catherine Simmons Flying S Farm of Woodbury to sell produce through the market.

Consumers may sign up for produce at http://stonesriver.locallygrown.net/. About 200 customers signed up for the produce this summer. Also, J.R. Stroud of Jones Mill Farms and Certified Kitchen and 4 K Farms will take orders for produce, baked goods and preserves, butters, jams and jellies at Popsstroud@aol.com. Deliveries will be made from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays.

“As long as we have produce, we’ll continue to stay open,” Erdmann said. “We may have produce year-round. That’s my goal.”

Erdmann covered up the lettuce to protect it from frost. He expects it to last through December.

Erdmann believes it’s important to buy locally grown produce, for both the consumer and farmer.

“You can’t beat the freshness,” Erdmann said. “People who got lettuce Thursday was picked Wednesday night. I’m in the process of getting certified as a naturally grown farm” similar to organic growing.

Carol Clarke said Rainbow Hill Farm will have fresh apples available through Thanksgiving. She expects to have zucchini, beets, carrots and broccoli.

Her husband, Walter, said he’s found many consumers at the Farmers’ Markets who are committed to buying locally grown produce.

“I’ve never seen anything develop to rapidly – the interest in this produce,” Clarke said.

Flying S Farms is expected to sell baked goods and produce and perhaps frozen soup during the winter through Stones River Market.

Erdmann said other winter crops available will be butternut, acorn and spaghetti squash.

“I am passionate about the market,” Erdmann said. “I’m trying to figure out how to grow year round. Where else can you get fresh lettuce in December?”
