Uncle Dave Macon Days will offer beginning old-time workshops free and open to the public on Saturday, July 14, at the 30th annual Uncle Dave Macon Days festival site at Cannonsburgh.
Old-time buck dancing will be taught by Thomas Maupin and old-time banjo will be taught by Rebekah Weiler.
Maupin, 68, of Murfreesboro, is a multi-award-winning national champion buck dancer. He won the senior buck dancing contest July 7 at the 36th annual Smithville Fiddlers' Jamboree and has earned first place numerous times at Uncle Dave Macon Days.
Weiler, 21, a junior MTSU history major and 2004 Blackman High School graduate, also has won or made finals at numerous contests. On July 6, she became the first female ever to win the Fiddlers' Jamboree old-time banjo contest. She represents Gold Tone banjos.
These workshops are designed for the very beginner, people who have never or know very little about old-time banjo or old-time buck dance. They are being organized with the help of members in the Nashville Old-Time String Band Association.
A limited number of banjos will be available. People should bring their own if possible Tap shoes are not necessary for the dance workshop.
Old-time banjo will be held in the meeting room in the back of the antique car garage (located behind the old country store) at Cannonsburgh and the old-time buck dance workshop will be in the gazebo in the center of Cannonsburgh.
Both are free, but each is limited to 10-to-12 participants.
A sign-up sheet will be available at registration area near main stage. People can register after 4 p.m. Friday, July 13, and starting at 8:30 a.m. July 14.
Deering Banjos is a participating sponsor.
