Franklin Road Christian School won first place overall at the recent Tennessee Association of Christian Schools (TACS) State Fine Arts Competition in the Senior High Division.
"This is a talented group of Senior High students," said Sherri Stiles, a teacher at Franklin Road and coordinator of Franklin Road's Fine Arts entries. "I look forward to their efforts at Nationals.”
Students from Franklin Road won 23 first-place awards, 16 second-place awards and 15 third-place awards.
"This year's Junior High group also performed well,” she continued, adding junior high students won 10 first-place awards. Six of the Junior High wins came in the music category.
"Things look good for the next few years based on these results," she said. Elementary students claimed two first-place awards and four second-place awards for Franklin Road during the competition.
Junior high and elementary divisions finished second overall during the competition.
The overall first place award presented at Friday's closing ceremony represents the first time that the school won that award at the Senior High level. Franklin Road will send 35 senior high school students to represent Tennessee at the American Association of Christian Schools (AACS) National Bible, Music, Speech, Art and Academic Competition at Bob Jones University in April. Approximately 1,200 students from the 53 TACS member schools competed in more than 125 categories of fine arts and academics at the elementary, junior high, and senior high levels over the three-day event.
Categories included music, speech, Bible quiz, Bible preaching, Bible teaching and academics. Franklin Road again hosted the event, which has been held in Murfreesboro for the past 34 years according to Charles Walker, executive director of Chattanooga-based TACS. Senior High hand bell group and choral group both received first place awards and will represent Tennessee at Nationals.
"All the extra hours and hard work before and after school paid off," said Justin Pearson, music director at Franklin Road Baptist Church and coordinator of many of the school's music and speech entries.
Franklin Road's hand bell and singing groups have made recent appearances at Nationals under Pearson's direction.
"We will have to work around spring break the week before Nationals to keep our groups in competition form," Pearson said anticipating continued work for National competition. Franklin Road also performed well in speech categories receiving six first-place awards including Bible preaching, oral interpretation of scripture, dramatic reading, oral interpretation of poetry and extemporaneous speaking.
