Murfreesboro’s Franklin Road Christian School is sending 27 students to National Fine Arts Competition following a second place overall finish during the recent Tennessee Association of Christia n Schools (TACS) State Fine Arts and Science Fair Competition in the Senior High Division.

Students from Franklin Road senior high through elementary divisions won 28 first place awards, 17 second place awards, and 17 third place awards. This year's second place Senior High overall finish follows a first place finished at last year's competition. Hendersonville Christian Academy took first place overall in the Senior High division.

Mike Norris, Pastor of Franklin Road Baptist Church and President of Franklin Road Christian School, observed that these students maintain good grades academically, are student athletes, serve as volunteers at church and find time to practice and prepare for Fine Arts competition. He recognized their efforts and hard work during a recent Parent Teacher Fellowship that showcased many of Franklin Road's state competition entries.

From Wednesday, March 24 through Friday, March 26, approximately 1,200 students from the 55 member schools competed in more than 125 categories of fine arts and academics at the elementary, junior high, and senior high levels over the three day event at Franklin Road Christian School. Categories included music, speech, Bible quiz, Bible preaching, Bible teaching, and academics.

The State Arts and Science Fair moved to Franklin Road this year after the school completed a 26,000-square foot education building expansion. Art projects and science fair projects were evaluated in a number of categories at the elementary, junior high and senior high levels.

Franklin Road will send 27 Senior High students to represent Tennessee at the American Association of Christian Schools (AACS) National Bible, Music, Speech, Art and Academic Competition at Bob Jones University in April.

Senior High Handbell Choir and Senior High Large Vocal Ensemble both received first place awards and will represent Tennessee at Nationals. "The Franklin Road music groups gave extra hours and hard work before and after school which paid off" according to Justin Pearson, Music Director at Franklin Road Baptist Church and coordinator of many of the school's music and speech entries. Franklin Road's handbell and singing groups have made recent appearances at Nationals under Pearson's direction. "We will have to work around spring break before Nationals to keep our groups in competition form" stated Pearson as he anticipated continued work for National competition.

Franklin Road also performed well in speech categories receiving four first place awards including Bible preaching, oral interpretation of scripture, oral interpretation of poetry, and original persuasive oratory.

"This group continues a tradition of reaching Nationals,” said Sherri Stiles, a teacher at Franklin Road and coordinator of Franklin Road's Fine Arts entries.

"Some of this group are repeat State champs having been part of National competition in past years. I think their experience at Nationals should help them this year,” said Stiles, who will accompany the group to National competition to face state champions from other state Christian school associations.

"This year's Junior High group also performed well," said Stiles who reported the Junior High students won seven first place awards. Five of the Junior High wins came in the music category.

"These Junior High competitors should help continue our State performances for the next few years based on these results," she said. Elementary students claimed six first place awards, a second place award, and three third place awards for Franklin Road during the competition.

"These awards for individual categories, group performances, and overall awards recognize the hard work and dedication of Franklin Road students and the faculty who helped them prepare for State competition," said David Justice, administrator of Franklin Road Christian School. "TACS encourages excellence in fine arts and academics at its member schools through this program and its an honor for Franklin Road to receive the overall second place award with the good competition from many excellent programs at the other TACS member schools.

"This is a great experience and opportunity for our Senior High students to visit a Christian college campus and interact with other Christian school students from across the Nation while representing their school and state in fine arts competition," he continued.

Franklin Road Senior High winners will join with other State winners to represent Tennessee at AACS National competition beginning April 13.
