Murfreesboro’s traditional football powers, Oakland and Riverdale, meet yet again in the TSSAA playoffs in a Battle of the Boro II Friday night at 7 at Riverdale’s Tomahawk Stadium.
The game will be broadcast on WGNS(FM 100.5, FM 101.9, AM 1450.
Both teams are 10-2, highly ranked in various polls, suffered both their losses in overtime and are among only eight Class 6A teams remaining in competition.
Both faced multiple ranked teams during the season, including at least one win over another member of the final eight. Riverdale knocked off Farragut, 20-17, while Oakland whipped Brentwood, 27-7.
Both teams boast iron-ribbed defenses, star two-way linemen who are Mr. Football finalists (Oakland’s Tim McAdoo and Riverdale’s Chris Mayes) and dangerous running attacks.
Oakland’s Tee Mayberry and Riverdale quarterback Cody West are their respective teams most dangerous offensive performers but both have deep supporting casts.
The closeness of the two state powers is evidenced in their regular season game when Riverdale edged Oakland, 13-10, when West banged into the end zone from the one on fourth down.
Both teams also come off convincing wins last week in the second round of the playoffs.
Oakland hammered Cookeville, 42-0, while Riverdale put a surprising 31-7 defeat on Blackman.
