Oakland scored on its first series of the game and held on to win a smashmouth District 7AAA matchup with previously undefeated Blackman Friday night in a crosstown contest between two of the top six teams in the state.
The game pitted the head coaches of the last three TSSAA state championships in defending state champion Oakland's Thomas McDaniel and Blackman's Phillip Shadowens who won two straight titles as Smyrna head coach in 2006 and 2007.
The contest on a wet and chilly Friday evening at Blackman was indicative of the two coaches, a collision of strong-willed, iron-ribbed defenses and power offenses.
Oakland pounded the ball for what proved to be all the points it needed in the first quarter with T. Mayberry leaping into the end zone from one yard out with 4:25 left in the fourth quarter.
But the game wasn't decided until the last minute of play when, after the Patriot defense held on fourth and less than a yard on the Blaze's last desperation drive, Mayberry broke away on a 32-yard scoring run
Oakland's win lifted Riverdale to the top of the district playoff standings as the only team undefeated in district play. Oakland, an overtime loser to Riverdale two weeks ago, and Blackman are both now 3-1 in the district.
Riverdale rose to 4-0 in yet another tough defensive struggle, squeaking past Siegel 7-6. Like Blackman, Riverdale, the third Rutherford County team ranked in the top 10 in the state last week, is 7-1.
In a traditional rivalry game, Smyrna rambled past La Vergne, 32-8.
In Class A action Middle Tennessee Christian School led much of the game but bowed to District 9A leader Cascade, 28-21, whle in non-district action Eagleville fell to Signal Mountain, 33-13. Lancaster Christian fell to Ezell-Harding, 28-8.
