The Rutherford County Health Department, located at 100 W. Burton St. in Murfreesboro, will offer H1N1 injectable and FluMist® vaccine Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

No appointment is necessary to receive the vaccine. The H1N1 flu vaccine will be provided at no charge.

H1N1 FluMist® is a safe and effective vaccine for healthy people ages 2 to 49 that are not pregnant and are not allergic to eggs. We are urging eligible people to take the nasal vaccine to help ensure we have enough injectable vaccine to meet the needs of those in high-risk groups who can’t take FluMist®, such as pregnant women and very young children. H1N1 FluMist® is prepared from a weakened, live virus, and does not cause illness. The vaccine is given by nasal mist and does not contain thimerosal or other preservatives.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has determined the following priority groups for receiving H1N1 flu vaccine:

• Pregnant women because they are at higher risk of complications and can potentially provide protection to infants who cannot be vaccinated.

• Children ages 6 months to 24 years of age.

• Household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age because younger infants are at higher risk of flu-related complications and cannot be vaccinated. Vaccination of those in close contact with infants younger than 6 months old might help protect infants by creating a zone of health around the child.

• Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel because infections among healthcare workers have been reported and this can be a potential source of infection for vulnerable patients. Also, increased absenteeism in this population could reduce healthcare system capacity.

• Persons aged 25 through 64 years who have health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease, associated with higher risk of medical complications from influenza.

Please call the Rutherford County Health Department at 615-898-7880, extension 158 for updated information regarding vaccines.
