Middle Tennessee should get some much-needed rain this week from a weakened Tropical Storm Fay, but local flash flooding mat accompany the storm.
The rainfall is needed in Middle Tennessee, which has seen the lingering effects of last summer’s drought and a resurgence of drought conditions because of little rain falling in the month of August.
“We went 19 days without measurable rainfall in Nashville this month but then we only got 0.01 inches on the 20th,” said Bobby Boyd, NWS meteorologist in Nashville.
That changed last night when Rutherford County saw an average of 0.31 inches of rain over night, with as much as 0.76 inches falling in the western part of the county as the leading edge of Tropical Depression Fay made it’s way into Tennessee.
Fay drenched the Southeast over the weekend, bringing as much as 7 inches of rain to parts of Alabama and 10 inches to southern Georgia after stalling over the Gulf Coast.
Fay is expected to bring more rain into Middle Tennessee throughout the week as it pushes northward through Mississippi and eventually Tennessee.
The National Weather Service predicts a 60-percent chance of heavy rain today in southern and eastern Tennessee through Tuesday night, further chances of rain falls with each day after.
As the system moves through the mid-state, the NWS expects heavy rainfall until Tuesday night with more than 4 inches of rain possible, which may lead to localized flooding.
The Nashville area is expected to see between 1-2 inches of rain from the system, with heavier rain falling in the southern parts of the mid-state.
