7AAA District Tournament Girls – Round 2 from Blackman High

The # 1 seed Riverdale girls (28 – 0) beat Oakland (19 – 9), 65 – 30 in round two of the District Tournament.

Riverdale had a slight rebound advantage but made only 6 turnovers while Oakland committed 24. The Lady Pats also had a bad night at the foul line hitting only 3 of 11.

Scoring for Oakland: Monica Barrett had 6 and Ke Ke Cook had 5.

Riverdale had the most balanced scoring that I have seen all year: Shacobia Barbee had 14, Tyisha Petty and Olivia Jones both had ten, while Ashley Henry had 9 and Jessica Azor and Alexa Middleton both tallied 8.

In the second girl’s game, Blackman (20 – 5) and Siegel (22 – 7) hooked up in a very close contest, which Blackman eventually won 34 – 31. The game featured a slow and mistake filled first half with Siegel’s Maddie Denton hitting a three at the horn to give the Stars a 15 – 13 halftime lead. The Blaze won the second half 21 – 16 in a game where points were hard to come by and both teams shot under 40 percent.

For the Stars Shanice Cason had 11 and Shelbie Davenport had 8.

For Blackman Chelsey Hall had 9 and Katie Smith had 8.

On Monday night Siegel will take on Oakland at 6:00 for 3rd place and Riverdale will play Blackman for the Championship at 7:30. Siegel and Oakland will travel on Friday night and Blackman and Riverdale both host games on the same night.

7AAA District Tournament Boys – Round 2 from Blackman High

The Siegel boys (28 – 2) had beaten Blackman (14 – 11) twice during the year with the last one being an overtime victory just a few days ago.

In the second round of the District Tournament Saturday night the Stars were dominant in the paint for most of the game but never really put the Blaze away. In fact, the Stars won only one quarter, the 2nd, but it was by the huge margin of 19 – 6. This proved to be enough as Blackman never recovered from the intense Siegel 2nd quarter press and the Stars went on to win 54 - 42.

In the only meaningful stat of the game, Siegel shot 53 percent from the floor while Blackman shot 36 percent - both teams had only three 3s.

The Siegel “bigs” led the scoring as Cedrick Williams had 22 and Stephen Hurt had 19.

For Blackman, Darius Thompson, Greg Peak and Alec McMiller each had 8 points.

In the second boy’s game of the evening LaVergne (20 – 6) packed the paint early in an effort to shut down high scoring Vari Craig of Riverdale (18 – 10). LaVergne’s quickness and defense was the difference in this one as the Wolverines held Craig to only 4 points in the first three quarters. He finished with 14 but most were scored long after LaVergne had secured the 61 – 47 victory.

For Riverdale, Donya Burnett had 11, and D.J. Smith and TJ Chesterfield both had 9.

For LaVergne, Tyler Irvin had 17, Kyle Carter had 10 (and numerous assists) and Terrence Dixon had 9.

On Tuesday night Blackman will take on Riverdale for 3rd place at 6:00 and Siegel will play La Vergne for the championship at Blackman High.

All four teams will advance to the Region Tournament with Blackman and Riverdale on the road on Saturday night and Siegel and LaVergne hosting a first round game on the same night. Opponents and tournament details will be announced Wednesday.

After that the tournament moves to LaVergne High.
