Five suspects charged in assault of Smyrna undercover officer

Five suspects were indicted after they were accused in an attempted assault of an unidentified Smyrna Police undercover officer Jan. 16, the police spokesman reported.

The Narcotics Division was using one of the undercover narcotics officers during the investigation of an illegal narcotics transfer, reported Sgt. Bobby Gibson.

“During the investigation, two suspects attempted to assault the undercover officer with a weighted glove and a baseball bat,” Gibson reported. “The officer was able to avoid the assault. The suspects took the narcotics from the transfer and tried to flee pursuing officers.”

The suspects then ran to a vehicle where three more accomplices were waiting. The two assaulting suspects, along with their accomplices inside the vehicle, were caught by officers as they attempted escape and all five were taken into custody, the spokesman said. All five were indicted late last week on charges relating to this incident.

Arrest warrants on the suspects stated the deal involved three pounds of marijuana.

Marcus Hancher, 19, of Smyrna, who allegedly attempted to assault the undercover officer, was charged with aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, possession of marijuana for resale, possession of drug paraphernalia and evading arrest.

Maximillian Humphreys, 20, of La Vergne, who allegedly attempted to assault the undercover officer, was charged with aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, possession of marijuana for resale, possession of drug paraphernalia, evading arrest and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Gage Reynolds, 18, of La Vergne, who was believed in the vehicle, was charged with aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.

Corey Davis, 20, of La Vergne, who was believed in the vehicle, was charged with aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery. The arrest warrant accused him of provided a hooded jacket to Hatcher.

Samuel Staten, 18, of La Vergne, who was believed in the vehicle, was charged with aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.

They are scheduled to discuss their cases with their attorneys and prosecutors June 5.
