First day to pick up paperwork for Boro elections

Notice is being given by the Rutherford County Election Commission (RCEC) that the City of Murfreesboro has called for an election to be held April 20, 2010 for the purpose of electing a Mayor, three city council members and three school board members.

Friday, Oct. 23 is the first day to pick up petitions for this election. Qualifying deadline is Jan. 21, 2010.

Petitions may be picked up at the Rutherford County Election Office located at 1 Public Square S. Suite 103, Murfreesboro between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. M-F. Potential candidates shall file their nominating petition for the office they seek with the Rutherford County Election Commission. The petition must be signed by a minimum of 25 registered voters who reside within the city limits of Murfreesboro.

The RCEC recommends that the petitioner exceed the minimum number of signatures. Each voter who signs the petition must also provide his or her residence address as it appears on their voter registration records. There are no filing fees. Candidates must file their nominating petition by noon Jan. 21, 2010, which is the qualifying deadline.

Qualifications to be Mayor and Council include being 18 years of age or older, being a citizen of the United States and Tennessee, and shall be a bona fide resident of Murfreesboro for a minimum of one year and a resident of the city for a minimum of four months prior to the Election.

Qualifications for School Board member include being a registered voter of the City of Murfreesboro, a bona fide resident of the city for at least one year prior to the election to membership of the School Board, and at least 25 years of age by the Election date. The applicant for school board must file proof of graduation from high school, a college diploma, or a General Education Diploma (GED) with the Rutherford County Election Commission by the qualifying deadline.
