Fireworks still discharged Tuesday after fire destroyed the Fireworks Supermarket Monday evening on South Church Street, an assistant fire chief said.

Two or three employees inside the store managed to escape before flames engulfed the store about 5 p.m. located near Interstate 24, said Assistant Fire Chief Gary Farley. They didn’t have time to move their vehicles that were destroyed by the fire.

Because of the danger, firefighters attacked the fire defensively from outside rather than trying to enter the building with the exploding fireworks.

“Right now, we don’t know the cause of the fire until they get inside the building and do an investigation as to the cause and origin and interview more people,” Farley said. “It could be the end of the week before we know what the cause is.”

Assistant Fire Marshal Carl Peas was joined in his investigation by sheriff’s department detectives, Murfreesboro Police, the state fire marshal’s office and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Employees from the Tennessee Department of Conservation and Environment were monitoring the environmental impact.

Because the scene is still hot, investigators have not been able to examine the building. Also, they can’t get inside because the roof and building is unsafe and unstable.

“It’s going to take some tedious work,” Farley said, explaining firefighters will have to get heavy-duty equipment to move the burned debris so investigators can probe the remains and determine the cause.

The Loyd family owns the fireworks store.

Firefighters remained on the scene all night to make sure the ruins didn’t blaze up again and as a precaution.

Murfreesboro Police will secure the scene overnight Tuesday and Wednesday morning.

I hope they can rebuild.

Zoning regulations need to be stricter on this type of business. Murfreesboro should not allow this business to re-build at this location. This type of business needs to be far away from a busy state hwy, and an interstate route!!
Wasn't M'boro trying to ban Fireworks sales inside the City limits, anyway ????

The Boro's fire department should be commended on a job well done.. they handled themselves well and put out a difficult fire quickly....Good Job

Five-Eight, good point! The store's been at that location for as long as I can remember and I've lived here all my life. Nothing like getting grand-fathered in to keep you in business.

i hope they DON'T rebuild!

A fireworks store is basically a building filled with explosives that are intended to be used by people who do not know how to safely use explosives, many of them children.

Someboedy explain to me again WHY we need to give kids crude bomb-like devices to celebrate a holiday?

Bosda.....what planet are you from? Didnt your alien leaders teach you that on the first anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1777, fireworks were displayed as a manner of celebration?

Fireworks are clearly marked that they are not for young children. However inevitable some adults do not heed this warning.

FACTS TIME - According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission in 2004, patients who visited the emergency room for fireworks related injuries numbered 9 out of every 100,000. Compare this with pens/pencils, which cause 35, skateboards, which cause 126, and bicycles, which cause 847! The average child is four times more likely to visit the emergency room from a writing utensil injury than they are from fireworks.

Lighten up Frances.

PS - There is no reason why they should not be allowed to rebuild.
