Murfreesboro experienced one of its safest Independence Day holidays, thanks to the new fireworks ordinance, the weather and the economy.

During past years, Murfreesboro Police officers and city councilmen were pelted with mortar rounds, Roman candles and reloadable fireworks.

Due to safety issues, the Mayor and City Council banned those types of fireworks sales within the city in a new ordinance.

Maj. Clyde Adkison said the new ordinance, along with rain showers, eliminated the problems of past years.

Uniformed Lt. Tom Sissom listed the ordinance, rain and tighter economy as factors that made the streets safer.

“There weren’t as many fireworks,” Sissom said. “We had very few arrests.”

Adkison said police worked extended duty hours to keep people from shooting fireworks at each other.

Sissom said patrol officers and bicycle officers were scheduled to work 12-hours shifts but because the conditions were “considerably better,” they got to go home earlier.
