An explosion severely injured a sheriff’s deputy’s father Friday and a separate fire caused more than $178,000 in damages to a garage Sunday near Lascassas, sheriff’s deputies reported.
Robert Romans of Leanna Road suffered severe burns when cutting lids of off barrels near his home, Cpl. Scot Appleton reported. Fuel inside exploded, causing Romans to suffer the burns. He is the father of sheriff’s Deputy Mike Romans.
“Deputy Romans said Mr. Robert Romans had severe burns to his arms and hands, especially his right arm and hand,” Appleton reported.
He was taken for medical treatment.
In another fire, owner Melvin Owen of Colorado Court near Lascassas sustained about a $178,000 loss when fire destroyed his garage containing $100,000 worth of tools, Deputy Brad Lynn reported.
Owen was paining and dropped paint thinner onto a running air compressor, igniting the fire, Lynn reported. The fire engulfed the $25,000 garage that contained a motorcycle, Chevrolet Corvette, motorcycle trailer and canoe.
The fire was so intense it melted the siding of a house occupied by Emily Dearden of Arizona Drive, the deputy reported. The fire also damaged a swing set and the yard. Her loss was estimated at $10,000.
Lascassas Volunteer Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze.
