Heavy smoke and flames poured through a duplex on fire Tuesday morning at the intersection of Bell Street and Middle Tennessee Boulevard in front of MTSU.
Murfreesboro firefighters responded at 10:51 a.m. to the duplex at 2403 and 2405 Middle Tennessee Boulevard where they found heavy smoke on the side of the building and heavy flames coming from the front door and window, said Assistant Fire Chief Allen Swader.
No one was home. The occupants were MTSU students who are on spring break this week.
“We’re not sure how many people lived here,” Swader said.
Firefighters contained most of the damage to the 2403 duplex where the fire originated while the 2405 duplex sustained mostly heavy smoke damage.
“We lost a cat due to smoke inhalation,” Swader said.
Cause of the fire remains under investigation by Assistant Fire Marshals Nora Smith and Michael Bartlett.
The house was insured by owner Bruce Frizzell but it was unknown if the occupants carried renters’ insurance.
