Arson is suspected in a fire causing $200,000 damage to a duplex early Friday on state Route 96 West (Franklin Road), a sheriff’s deputy reported.
One neighbor saw a Hispanic man outside the residence before noticing the back porch on fire, Deputy Steve Craig reported. Two other witnesses called 911.
The duplex owned by Mary Kathryn Liles was insured but rented out to two individuals, the deputy reported. One tenant was moving out and the second tenant was not home. It was unknown if the tenants had renters’ insurance.
Salem-Blackman Volunteer firefighters attacked the blaze. Detective Randy Groce is investigating cause of the fire.
