Stones River National Battlefield will present programs on Aug. 30-31 that highlight how a significant event like the Battle of Stones River can be perceived in many different ways.

The Battle of Stones River was one of the most important battles of the Civil War. The Union victory
bolstered Northern morale and set the stage for decisive military campaigns into the heart of the Confederacy. Soldiers and civilians had different reactions to the battle and its outcome. During the weekend, their stories will come together to give visitors a fuller understanding of the how individual circumstances shape our perception of historical events.

The program schedule is as follows.

10 a.m. - The Storm Approaches - Visitors will listen to the viewpoints of a sergeant in the Union army and a Murfreesboro widow as they describe their experiences prior to the Battle of Stones River.

11 a.m. - Fighting for Home and Hearth - Watch an infantry unit drill as you listen to the story of the Rutherford Rifles and their desperate fight to save their homes and families from the northern invaders.

1 p.m - The Slaughter Pen - A Confederate and Union soldier will share their stories from one of the deadliest places on the battlefield. (Includes a musket firing demonstration)

1:30 p.m. - The Business of War - Prominent local businessman John Spence will share his insights about the war’s impact on his town.

2 p.m. - The Line That Wouldn’t Break - Two soldiers will talk about the fighting along the Nashville Pike on Dec. 31, 1862. (Includes an Artillery Firing Demonstration)

2:30 p.m. - Losing Everything - Mrs. Hollie McFadden’s daughter will talk about the terrible losses suffered by her family in the aftermath of the Battle of Stones River.

3 p.m. – Breckinridge’s Charge - Listen to the stories of two soldiers who fought in the final action of the Battle of Stones River. (Includes an Artillery Firing Demonstration)

These programs are part of a series of interpretive programs offered at the battlefield during the year. Stones River National Battlefield is located on the Old Nashville Highway, northwest of Murfreesboro.
