Farmers' Market: Muscadines, cushaws on sale

Plump muscadines were on sale Tuesday for $4 a box at the Farmers' Market under the shed at Cannonsburgh on Front Street which opens each Tuesday and Friday from 6-11 a.m.

Also, fresh pears were selling for 75 cents a pound.

Homegrown Tennessee mushrooms will be on sale Friday. One shopper said she craved the fresh mushrooms.

Honey from Keith Elrod’s hives in Rockvale were available for $6 and $11.

Many farmers still had heirloom tomatoes with the yellow cherry tomatoes on sale for $2 a basket and original red zebra and orange strawberry tomatoes for $2 a pound. Other heirloom tomatoes selling for $4 a pound earlier were on sale at $2.50 a pound.

The fall harvest brought turnip greens at $1.25 a pound or $12 a bushel, small pumpkins two for $1 and three for $1 and large pumpkins for $5. Cushaws, a green striped potato pumpkin, sold for $5 each. The cushaws are mostly used for fall decorations rather than eating.

Today's prices included:

$1 a pound to $3 a basket — sweet potatoes

$1 each — spaghetti squash

$1 for two — cream of the crop acorn squash

$1-$3/tray-small potatoes

$2/tray - okra

$1/tray - yellow squash

$1/pound — zucchini

$2 – watermelons

$3-$10 – pumpkins, depending on size

$3/tray — beans and peas

$4 to $7 a basket — Romes, tart Rhode Island Greening and red and yellow delicious apples

$2 – Cantaloupes

$5 per quart — blueberries

$7 for one, $12 for two or $25 for five — Potted Mums.

$3/gallon — Mums

$4/pot — lettuce

$3 harvested from pot — lettuce

$1 a tray — Eggplants

$1 a tray — Sweet banana peppers

$5-$6 — One-half pints of Muscadine grape jelly, white grape jelly, organic pear preserves and pear honey.

$6 — Jars of dried green, yellow and red peppers used in soups

$6 — Smoked peppers

$4 — sourdough bread

$3 — Cornbread

$3 — Sundrop cake

$1 each — Brownies made with Ghiradelli chocolate

$1/slice — Lemon bars, chess squares, brownies

$7 — Pecan, chess and brown sugar pies

$2 – Fried pies, blackberry, peach, apple, chocolate, pecan and sugarfree apple

$4 — sourdough, cinnamon and banana breads

$8 — Sundrop, peanut butter and pound cakes

$1 per bag — brownies, chocolate chip cookies, chess squares and oatmeal cake
