After 27 years of service, Murfreesboro Fire Department Assistant Chief Gary Farley is retiring Friday, March 11.

“I have enjoyed working for the City of Murfreesboro for the last 27 years. The City has provided me the opportunity to provide a living for myself and my family. I have also made many friends that will last me a lifetime,” Farley said.

Farley began his career with the fire department as a firefighter in September 1984.

In December 1987, he was promoted to driver and in October 1988 was promoted to fire inspector. In November 1994, Farley was promoted to assistant chief.

He is a member of the Tennessee Fire Chiefs Association and Tennessee Fire Safety Inspector Association. He was a past member and chairperson for the Tennessee Firefighting Commission.

“We truly appreciate Gary and all his years of hard work and dedication to the Murfreesboro Fire Department. We wish him well on all of his future endeavors,” Chief Cumby Gaines said.

He was a member of the Urban Area Security Initiative District 5’s Response Committee for grants. He serves as chairman for the local Emergency Planning Commission, which encompasses all municipalities in Rutherford County.

Farley also plans to spend more time with family.

He and wife Deborah have four children, Bobby, Carla, Chad, and Chris, and two grandchildren, Brayden and Peyton.
