Read To Succeed of Rutherford County is proud to present the 3rd annual Express Yourself Arts Conference (EYAC), an arts experience for high school students, to be held from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Thursday, March 11 at Patterson Park Community Center in Murfreesboro.

EYAC provides students in ninth-12th grades in Rutherford County’s public, private and home schools, with opportunities to know peer artists, participate in workshops taught by professionals, gain perspective on arts-oriented careers, and find focus, support and resources locally for further creative work. The inaugural conference in 2007 opened its doors to more than 100 students and teachers from public and private schools in Rutherford county.

This year’s conference includes workshops on poetry, screenprinting, Manga drawing, illustration, theatre improv and other disciplines, led by active professional artists from within the Middle Tennessee area and including from organizations such as YEAH and Youth Speaks Nashville.

The conference’s keynote speaker is Sigmund Brouwer, acclaimed author of youth and adult novels including the “Ghost Rider” and “Accidental Detective” series.

Read to Succeed has partnered with Rutherford County Schools, the Business Education Partnership, Youth Empowerment Through Arts and Humanities (YEAH), Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation, and area businesses to bring the conference back for a third year.

Applications are available in area high schools and are due Wednesday, Feb. 17.

The application process includes submitting a sample of original written or visual art and a letter of interest.

Students from each high school must be accompanied by a teacher from their school. Contact Laura Beth Jackson for information on school teacher coordinators at ljackson@rutherfordchamber.org.

Read To Succeed, the community literacy collaborative in Rutherford County, will promote reading, with an emphasis on family literacy. The nonprofit initiative supports literacy programs and fosters awareness of the importance of reading. Visit www.readtosucceed.org for more information.
