| The Evening Exchange Club of Murfreesboro will celebrate 60 years of service to the community at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 7 at the DoubleTree Hotel on Old Fort Parkway, according to President Donna Gibson.
Special honorees will be Past Club Presidents. The Club will also observe the 100th Birthday of the Exchange organization at the same time.
The local Club was charted on June 5, 1951, in a Charter Meeting at the Woman’s Club. The late Burns P. Phillips, Jr. was the original Club President. There are still four Charter Members active in the Club. They are: Dalton Stroop, William Coleman, Bill Allen, and John Hood. The first Exchange Club was chartered in Detroit, MI on March 27, 1911, which is the location of the Club’s National Convention in July 2011.
Featured speaker for the Anniversary is James M. Hartley CAE, Executive Vice President, The National Exchange Club.
He will be introduced by Don Wright, Murfreesboro Noon Club; Regional Vice President, Region 6, The National Exchange Club. The meeting will close with induction of officers for the Club Year effective July 1, 2011. The ceremony will be conducted by state Sen. Bill Ketron, Past National President, The National Exchange Club. Jeff Stroop is incoming President for the 2011-12 year.
The local Club’s activities over the years include: Youth, Community Service and American Citizenship.
It is also one of the prime sponsors of the Exchange Club Family Center to Prevent Child Abuse and Neglect, which is the National Project of Exchange Clubs across America. In 1979 the Evening Club organized the Noon Club from which came a National President (1995-96) in the person of Bill Ketron
The Evening Club has dedicated Freedom Shrines in many schools and public buildings throughout the County; was one of the original sponsors of the Babe Ruth League baseball; in early years sponsored the local Civil Defense organization; sponsored a Walking Horse Show for 48 years; and currently produces a Celebrity Waiters Dinner to raise funding for its many programs.
