A former MTSU student pleaded guilty Wednesday to making terrorist threats and setting three fires in a campus residence hall.
Ex-student Justin Jamal Davis, then 19, of Antioch was accused of sending threatening emails warning of “large scale destruction” if MTSU classes weren’t canceled in October the week before fall break, said MTSU Police Chief Buddy Peaster. Davis was also accused of setting three fires at Miss Mary Hall residence hall. MTSU canceled classes as a precaution.
MTSU Lt. Matt Foster and Murfreesboro Fire Department Assistant Fire Marshal Carl Peas developed Davis as a suspect.
Davis confessed to setting the fires and sending the emails,” Foster reported.
After an agreement between the district attorney’s office and his attorney, Circuit Court Judge Don Ash accepted the plea offer that sentenced Davis to 10 years in prison. He was sentenced to two years each for the fires and four years for the false report. All convictions are to be served on at a time.
Because of his lack of criminal record, Davis was allowed to be placed on diversion for 10 years. If he successfully completes the diversion, his criminal record may be erased. If he doesn’t, he will serve the sentence.
Davis was ordered to pay $12,000 restitution to MTSU. A restitution hearing is set June 8.
