A former sheriff’s detective’s speed allegedly was 71 mph two seconds before he struck an 11-year-old girl July 17, 2007 on Bradyville Pike, a prosecutor said Friday.
Tennessee Highway Patrol testing of a computer in former Detective Sgt. Ron Killings’ car showed “his speed was 62.8 mph” when his air bag deployed after striking Lakeisha White, said appointed prosecutor Joe Baugh of Franklin.
Also, Baugh said Killings failed to check the vitals, pulse and breathing of Lakeisha after hitting her but retrieved bottles of alcohol and dumped it.
Attorney Terry Fann, who represents Killings, said trial proof would show the former detective covered her with clothes and called an ambulance.
Comments from both Baugh and Fann occurred during a pretrial hearing before Circuit Court Judge David Bragg, resulting in Bragg continuing the trial scheduled next week for February.
Bragg ruled jurors will not hear evidence about Killings’ treatment of the girl because the prosecution doesn’t have a medical expert to testify she would have survived if he rendered aid.
Regarding the speed, Baugh said he received the THP report about the speed about 4:15 p.m. Thursday and gave a copy to the defense Friday morning. Although the report was past the deadline for evidence, Baugh asked the judge to allow the report as evidence at trial.
Fann said he hadn’t had time to review the report and to talk to experts about it.
Bragg said the report was brought in just days before the trial.
“The court feels the evidence is possibly germane and may be entered at trial,” Bragg said.
Fann said he needed more time to review the report.
Bragg continued the trial until Feb. 8. Fann will give a status report Nov. 20.

The way some folks feel, sidewalks would have prevented this accident but I see it as a combination of speed and a young girl out alone crossing the busy street.

It didn't matter if there was a crosswalk across the road or not. His car was traveling the length of a football field in 3 seconds (92.1ft/sec) even after he hit her. At 71mph which is 104 ft/sec he clearly is traveling to fast for conditions and exceeding the speed limit. Think how long it takes you to look both ways then crossing the road the road. Now think about looking both ways, you see nothing and start to cross, that’s 6 seconds to make it to the other side when running. He could've covered 600 ft in that time. She didn't stand a chance.
What I want to know is why the THP just now finished this report? Or if it was completed some time ago why has it taken so long to come to light? How many people and agencies are helping Killings get off the hook?

To the credit of the legal system the truth is coming out. Officers of the law can be bad actors. This looks like one of those cases. Good screening and good managing can reduce our danger from the good guys.

WHY WAS A CHILD OUT CROSSING THE STREET AT NITE WITH OUT AN ADULT----THIS SHOULD BE THE MAIN QUESTION.

It's hard to believe that he could manage the curve as you pass Parkview at that speed. You come up over a hill at that point and for sure they would not have seen each other in time.

Well I guess that takes care of the previous speculation, that he just deliberately kept on going. There's a reason we're instructed to keep 3-5 car lengths behind other drivers on a highway. That was a really reckless speed for anyone. I know I definitely would have lost control of my own vehicle and probably would have become a casualty, myself.
I don't see this as anyone being a "bad" person. Especially the poor girl. Yes, Killings was reckless, considering he wasn't involved in a high speed chase. Does it make him "bad" though?

Where on Bradyville Pike did this accident happen? Anyone know? It is a long road, and I was just wondering. What is the speed limit? Under 71 for sure. What a sad situation for everyone involved.

I can guarantee you if it was just a regular citizen and not a police officer the alcohol wouldnt be thrown out! I see the police all the time speeding when not going on a call or hitting their blue lights to get through a light and its a crying shame just because these people are supposed to be protecting us that they can get away with running over and killing an innocent child.

I live near the scene. between mid.tn.blvd. and minerva(recently reworked by tdot). The posted speed limit is 30 mph!

whatsthis, look at the facts, 30 mph posted speed limit versus 71 mph actual speed. That’s reckless driving, period! I don't care how many people he saved, is that credit for negligent deeds later? Does it make him above the law? Sure this is an awful thing all the way around, but what really makes this awful is there are plenty of people claiming Mr. Killings to be a wonderful and honorable man. He doesn't seem too honorable when he can't stand up to his own “accidents”. A true accident is one that does not involve negligence.

justawalkn: I'm sorry if your super-nanny didn't let you out of her sight when you were a child, but believe it or not, some of us begin to develop independence at a younger age. We you never allowed to cross the street to go to a friends house? Or walk down to the corner store? This isn't negligent behavior from a parent/guardian.
Leave it to Macgyver the throw in the math, but if you look at his numbers you'd notice that Killings could just as easily hit an adult who was crossing the street. And speed aside, do you not understand what damage would occur to a child's internal organs in a 30mph crash vs a 62mph crash?
With Sheriffs Deputies like Killings on the road, whether child or adult, I'd take extra precaution before I went justawalkn across any street.

It doesn't matter if this man was a good cop, person or whatever. He chose to have 2 bottles of liquor in his car. He chose to drive 72 in a 30. He chose to dispose of the bottles before taking care of the girl he just hit. His poor choices led to her death. He should be held accountable for all his actions just as a citizen in the same position would.
How old do you have to be before you can cross the street without and adult. I can tell you when I was 12 I was crossing streets on my own.

Its unfortunate that things like this occur. The detective (former) was at fault due to excessive speed. So too were this childs parents for not ensuring that the child was not out on the street alone at night. If alcohol were the cause for the detectives inappropriate behavior was any action taken to ensure that officers do not drink and drive and those that do choose this course of action are sent to mandatory rehab? There is nothing than can be done to bring this child back but every effort needs to be made to deal with this situation (including potential incarceration) and to ensure that this type of event does not ever happen again. Very unfortunate but senseless drinking and driving does occur every day on nearly every street in America; don't excuse it! Deal with it and move on.

We all need to keep in mind that a child will be a child, and any parent that says they know where their child is, or what they are doing 100% of the time, might not be that truthful of a parent....me included! A child will wonder off in the blink of an eye. There is no easy solution to this accident, but maybe we will all learn a lesson from what we know and watch for people around the roadways and slow down!

Until it came out that he was traveling 62mph when he struck her, I believed it was just a very tragic accident. I travel that road quite often, and I do speed some, I bet I have gone 40mph in that section a few times. Sixty plus, i'm not that stupid.

Why has it taken two years for this evidence to surface? Why was the officer allowed to go to a market and buy Gateraide before he was tested for alcohol? Why were the bottles of booze ignored at first? This entire investigation has been one coverup after another!

I thought this was in 2008? Man it does not seem like two years.

I'm surprised that more people
are not killed on this section of
the highway. Many people walk
on this stretch and there is no
side walk. If it were a rich side of
town, there would be sidewalks!
I sympathize for the families.

Let's cut to the chase here. Killings was speeding because he was a cop and thought he could get away with it. No fluff, no PC. no excuses. It happens all the time and everyone knows it. If I had a buck for every time I saw a cop make a turn without signaling, I could buy a new car! There is a double standard here, one for John Q public and one for the cops. This time it bit one, big time. Sadly, it cost a youngster her life in the process.
