A retro-style restaurant/bar catering to the over-30 crowd has opened near the intersection of West Northfield Boulevard and Northwest Broad Street in the Kroger shopping center.

Owner Doug Krupla opened Duggers at 1738 W. Northfield Blvd., formerly Anderson’s Catfish House, on May 9. The menu consists of everything from grilled chicken and half-pound hamburgers to wings and salads.

He describes the food served up at Duggers as “Americana working-class food.”

“It is the kind of stuff I like to go and eat,” Krupla said.

Duggers serves large portions at affordable prices, he said. Lunch will run most customers around $6 or $7.

Many of the recipes were developed by Krupla, including the wing sauces and fry seasonings.

“I have a definite passion for cooking stuff,” he said.

Menu standouts are the Texas chili hamburger, an open-faced hamburger covered in homemade chili, and wings covered in Dugger’s Sheer Insanity wing sauce.

Anyone who can eat six wings covered in the intensely hot sauce gets the wings and a soda for free. Hundreds have tried but only five have succeeded, Krupla said.

Krupla formerly operated The Final Approach, a restaurant located next to the Smyrna Airport, about 10 years ago. He has worked as a disc jockey for 19 years.

Duggers allows smoking so admittance is restricted to those 21 years and up. The restaurant features vintage car memorabilia, 22 plasma televisions, three big screen televisions, pool table and MTM trivia and poker. Karoke and live music will be featured on the Dugger’s stage.

Hours of operation are Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m.-1 a.m. and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m.-3 a.m. For more information, call Dugger’s at 809-2605.
