Swafford Properties will be honored with Main Street: Murfreesboro/Rutherford County’s Design Award for new construction at the revitalization organization’s annual meeting Feb. 17.

Rick Swafford’s new office/retail building located at 509 W. College Street is the third building Swafford has built along West College, and represents a significant investment in the central business district, said Richard Gabel, executive director of Main Street.

Located near the former Red Rose Dairies, the 2,000-square-foot office or retail building was completed at the end of 2008 and has yet to be leased.

Kidwell, South & Beasley will receive the Design Award for renovation and restoration. The law firm recently relocated their offices into the right side of the renovated building at 112 S. Maple St.

The circa 1877 building was the former location of Carpets by Ozburn near Holden Hardware.

Mark Sternberg, of Nashville, is in the process of restoring the exterior and interior of the left side of the building for a yet to be determined tenant, Gabel said.

Beckman’s Prescription Shop also will be honored as Business of the Year during Main Street’s annual membership meeting to be held at 11:30 a.m. at Maple Street Grill.

In addition to giving out awards, Main Street will elect new board members and officers for 2009 during the annual membership meeting.

Rick Meredith, assistant commissioner of the Community Development Division for the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development, will speak to the audience during the luncheon.

Main Street: Murfreesboro is one of 22 certified Main Street cities in Tennessee and began operation in 1985. The organization’s mission is to maintain, enhance, and promote the historic downtown as the heart of our community.

For all the tractor lovers out there, TriGreen Equipment is Murfreesboro is a hosting a Drive Green Utility Tractor Event Friday, Feb. 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event is designed to give rural property owners, agricultural producers and other interested consumers a chance to ride-and-drive and ask questions about the new utility tractors being introduced by the company. The events are being held at Miller Coliseum, 304 West Thompson Lane #B.

John Deere tractor specialists and dealer representatives will be on hand to demonstrate the equipment and answer questions.

Lynne Morton, advertising manager for TriGreen Equipment, said many people have lots of questions about the type, size, features and operation of the equipment they need to maintain their properties and this is a great way to get the information first hand.

“The Drive Green events are designed to provide people who may not be familiar with utility tractors and other equipment a chance to check out the equipment for themselves, operate it and learn more about the features, maintenance, attachments and other aspects of equipment ownership,” she adds. “We want to make it a fun and informative experience for everyone.”
