Erin Edgemon column: Brothers start home-based technology service business

ERIN EDGEMON, Business Editor

Brothers Nathan and Brian Lowhorn have started a home-based business dedicated to helping consumers buy, set up and use all of the latest technological gadgets.

The brothers, who grew up in Murfreesboro, compare their services to the ones offered by Best Buy’s Geek Squad.

But they say, their company The Tech Life offers better prices and more personal service.

“I see it as hiring a personal technology assistant,” Nathan Lowhorn said of the business.

The Tech Life can assist with the purchase, set up and use of such products as home audio and video equipment, computers, MP3 players, networking, mobile phones and much more.

The Lowhorn brothers also provide personal shopping services, price watching and in-person training.

They can advise consumers on what are the best products on the market for the best price.

“We want people to come to us and say this is what I need and this is our budget and let us go from there,” Nathan said.

Nathan and Brian Lowhorn decided to officially launch their company this summer after helping family and friends figure out and set up their new gadgets for years.

“It is one of those things that has just grown over the years,” Nathan said. “We want to do something we love as a job. We wanted to branch out and help other people.”

Richard and Donna Meeks have opened R&D Cycle Gear at 509 Memorial Blvd. next door to Vintage Vettes.

“I have been wanting to do something like this for awhile,” Richard said of opening the store. “Motorcycles have been a passion of mine for awhile.”

In fact, he has been riding since 1974; his favorite ride now is a pearl white Yamaha Road Star.

Richard left of his retail job of 22 years to live his dream of owning and operating his own store.

R&D Cycle Gear carries a wide selection of clothing and accessories for any motorcycle rider including merchandise that can’t be found in area dealerships.

Richard said he tried to carry some items that he would have trouble finding in area stores.

Merchandise includes men’s and women’s leather jackets, chaps and vests; novelty and Department of Transportation-approved helmets; saddle bags; novelty T-shirts and metal signs; motorcycle cleaning supplies; sunglasses; and other unique accessories.

Hours of operation are Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday noon-4 p.m. For more information, call 896-1158.
