Charges of theft over $20,000 and filing a false police report were filed against a Payday Advance assistant manager accused of inventing a robbery at the business Tuesday, the Murfreesboro Police spokesman said.

Assistant Manager Marcus Davis, 23, was charged after an investigation by Detective Doug Arrington, said spokesman Kyle Evans.

Davis told police he was leaving Payday Advance at 1155 N.W. Broad St. when two men ordered him to open the safe inside the business. One of the men ordered him at gunpoint to give him his wallet or he would shoot him in the head.

When the men began opening the safe, Davis told police he ran across Broad Street and watched until they left and called police. About $20,000 was missing from the safe.

Arrington interviewed Davis Tuesday night and reviewed surveillance video Wednesday. He interviewed Davis again Wednesday.

“During the interview, Davis admitted to the theft of $20,000 and detailed the false report of the armed robbery,” Evans said. “Information obtained during the interview resulted in the recovery of $3,800 of the stolen money related to this case.”

Davis, 23, of 1345 Wenlon Drive was charged and booked into Rutherford County Adult Detention Center where a hearing was set March 2 in General Sessions Court. He is being held on $6,500 bond.

“A motive have not yet been established but Davis has cooperated with the investigation,” Evans said.

Detectives are still working to recover more of the missing money.

“This was good police work by the detectives in this case,” Evans said.

We all knew there was something strange about this.

Why do people think they will get away with this kind of stuff?

As soon as I got to the "ran across the street and waited until they left" sentence it was obvious there was a fly in the ointment. Why in God's name would the crooks, in the middle of an armed robbery simply let this mope go for help? Duh! And why would he wait until the perps left to summon the cops?

This guy is a candidate for America's Dumbest Criminals.

a motive has not yet been established?

Are you kidding me? Have we really exhausted our common sense?

momx5: Good point! I can think of 20,000 motives, but perhaps we need a government commission to study it before we jump to any conclusions.

Combine 20,000 motives with the mentality of a rock and viola! America's Dumbest Criminal nominee.

Good thing nobody was chasing him, he might have tripped over his own pants.
