Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency would like to remind homeowners with tornado damage that reputable contractors will not ask for money before work is done.

There have been reports of possible scams taking place in the affected areas, said EMA spokesman Randy White. If you have any questions concerning a qualified contractor please call the Better Business Bureau at 867-0032 or the Chamber of Commerce at 893-6565.

Damage and cost report estimates concerning the tornados that hit Rutherford County on April 10 are currently:

• 845 homes damaged.

• 117 completely destroyed.

• 298 homes have major damage.

• 175 have minor damage.

• 255 more homes were directly affected in some way.

The estimated cost to businesses and residents is currently placed at $41.8 million. These estimates are subject to change as more damage is reported.

Trash and debris removal is being handled by the City and County Solid Waste, Highway Department. Residents are asked to put yard waste and storm debris in the right of way and not onto the street.

Large sections of houses and out buildings are to be removed by contractors hired by the insurance companies or the home owner. The County will not remove these materials. If you have any questions or concerns about debris removal in the county please call 898-7739.

The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance will be available from 2 p.m.-7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the next two weeks. They will have representatives at 1220 W. College St. in Murfreesboro. They can assist victims with insurance problems, questions or concerns. The Department asks that you bring your insurance policy with you so they can better assist you.

People who live in the affected area and with damage in any way are asked to call the information line. The numbers are (615) 890-2957 or (615) 890-5519.  These lines will be open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday – Friday. There are answering machines attached to the numbers for after hours use. Just follow the directions and leave a message. The lines will only be available for limited time.

Burning will not be allowed in the affected areas or the city of Murfreesboro. Burning is allowable outside the tornadoes impact areas in the county with a burn permit.
