Recent history tells us turnout for the Aug. 7 Rutherford County general election and state and federal primary will be scant.
Four years ago when the election cycle was the same as this year’s less than 13 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in the August election.
As this year, two major factors contributed to that paltry voter representation:
The county lineup is pretty thin. The only countywide offices up for election are roads superintendent and property assessor, both important positions but not historically much of a vote stimulator.
And, state office primaries also don’t seem to resonate with voters, even though the State Legislature has a huge impact on our daily lives. An open seat in the 48th District, where John Hood is retiring, is likely to see a bump in voters in those precincts, but overall a low turnout seems inevitable.
2) Also pushing down participation has to be the multiple times this year, and similar years in this election cycle, voters are asked to be vote too many times in too many differing elections.
Still, those who are truly patriotic, not just flag-wavers but too patriots, will vote, will participate in the democratic process to ensure its relevance and survival.
Early voting runs through Saturday. It’s quick and easy.
Be a patriot.
