Graduation season for high school seniors starts this week with most of our public schools holding ceremonies over the next seven days with Franklin Road Christian School ending the season May 29.
This year’s seniors face a more uncertain world than we have seen in decades due to economic difficulties of the past several months, making further education of particular value this year.
Advanced education always pays dividends, whether at a trade institute, junior college or traditional four-year school, and the options for new graduates in this community are numerous.
We congratulate each of the seniors on their achievement and encourage them to explore the many opportunities to enrich and empower their futures.
Make Memorial Day memorable
The Exchange Clubs of Murfreesboro will make this Memorial Day and holiday weekend one of the most poignant we have seen here with their sponsorship of the Flags of Remembrance Healing Field.
The clubs hope to plant more than 1,500 three-by-five-foot American flags on eight-foot poles on an open field near Belk at The Avenue.
An opening ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. May 23 with a closing, appropriately with the playing of “Taps,” at sundown May 25, Memorial Day.
The clubs are encouraging members of the community to honor the service and sacrifice of all military veterans, or even a personal hero, by sponsoring a flag in the Healing Field.
As we fight wars in two countries in the Middle East and daily see the dwindling of the numbers of the Greatest Generation that fought and won World War II, we should be all too mindful of the sacrifices of those who have worn our country’s military uniforms.
Honoring military veterans or others, such as those who served us so well in the recent Good Friday Tornado, costs $30 with the donor getting to keep the flag and pole as a tribute or for future use.
In addition to saluting a loved or cherished one, donors will also help the Exchange Clubs in their service to this community, particularly through programs to address child abuse.
The Healing Field should be a magnificent Memorial Day effort, saluting those for whom the day is recognized but also paying dividends to participants and the community at large.

Let’s keep TSSAA events
The TSSAA, the state high school sports governing body, brings its annual Spring Fling, an extravaganza of baseball, softball, track, tennis and other sports, to Murfreesboro and surrounding areas next week, providing a multi-million dollar boost to our economy.
High schools kids from Memphis to Mountain City, along with coaches, parents and fans, will flock to our city in literal droves to compete for various state championships.
The event is a huge boon to our community in many, many ways.
Chamber of Commerce officials can still use volunteers to help host the event and make sure our visitors get the most from the experience.
And, our community needs to be prepared to possibly make a financial investment in the event in the near future as other cities, notably Chattanooga, are making serious efforts to get the TSSAA to move the many state title competitions to their cities.
Helping keep the events and their economic dividends here is a no-brainer. |
