Whatever your politics, whomever your presidential candidate preference, we can all take pride in one aspect of Barack Obama’s election Tuesday as the next president of the United States.

Obama’s victory proves without question the American Dream that any man or woman can rise to the level of his or her own talents and ambitions regardless of birth circumstances.

Obama’s election as the first African-American to our nation’s highest office demonstrates that the American Dream is truly open to all, regardless of race, creed or economic standing.

He succeeded in an election process that was as competitive and spirited from the very start as any in recent history, and arguably the most competitive ever.

In the competition of ideas manifest in our electoral process, Obama’s race played at most a small role for and against him.

That he was successful as a black candidate represents a gigantic milestone in the American political process, our social evolution and our pursuit of the finest in American democratic principles.

Veterans Day is Tuesday as our nation will stop for a moment to honor those who have and do serve in the defense of freedom and democracy as practiced as such a high level of participation last Tuesday.

Time and time again in our history we have called upon men and women in military uniform to lift up arms and go against all human instinct by placing themselves at risk of life and health for their country.

Many have sacrificed fully and never returned home. Many, many others have lived their lives with physical and psychological scars beyond the imagination of those who were not called to serve.

Compensating veterans adequately is not possible.

We can however honor them and thank them for what they gave and give for our nation and for each of us individually who enjoy the immense blessings of what they preserved.

We extend congratulations to Siegel High School that has enjoyed a remarkable level of success in high school athletics in the past several days.

Last weekend Siegel was represented at the state cross country championships by both its boys and girls team who represented themselves and the school well.

Saturday the Lady Blaze soccer team became the first Rutherford County team to compete for the state championship.

And, Friday night the school’s football team made its first ever appearance in the TSSAA football championship playoffs.

Together that is a pretty remarkable showing for which the school’s faculty, students and supporters should be most proud.

I would be able to take this editorial seriously from a newspaper that did not print Stephen Lewis' racist column. If anyone here missed it, Mr. Lewis re-wrote the lyrics to a sitcom which starred black actors to be about President-elect Obama, and he refers to the White House as his "pimp pad." Check it out if you get the chance. It is sure to make you ashamed to be associated with this part of the country, which has long struggled to convince outsiders that not everyone here is racist.
